Food and Health
Traveling and living in space will bring new challenges and stresses to a human body that was not originally designed to handle these pressures. The students researched the topic of what deficiencies the body might face in that sort of environment, and how different kinds of nutrients can help alleviate some of the stresses that are brought about. We spoke with a professional nutritionist teacher about how we might be able to attain the needed nutrition from the food we eat. Lastly, we tried to create our own recipes to provide the necessary nutrients.
Notes about Nutrition
Space travel is certainly full of challenges to the human body, and chief among them is the topic of nutrition. In order to learn more about this topic, the students spoke with both an astronomer and a nutritionist. Shown here are some notes that the students took when learning about nutrition in general.

Notes to Communicate Needs to Nutrition Teacher
What are some of the nutrition and food challenges in space travel that must be overcome? The students made notes of things they researched and found out about this topic, which they later asked for advice for from our nutrition special speaker Ms. Zeng.

Smoothie Challenge
Eating in zero-g can become messy if you are not careful, and space food needs to be nutritious, tasty, and easy to eat. The class attempted to create a food that satisfies these three requirements, and we chose a kid favorite: smoothies. The student teams were given different requirements to meet each time they designed a new smoothie, working up to the ultimate goal of creating a smoothie which addressed the nutrition needs of astronauts, didn’t exceed fat and calorie limits, and tasted great. A big “thanks” to the students of Da’an Junior High School for helping us with this process. The covid-19 situation unfortunately interrupted this series of activities, but the students really got a feel and understanding of what is required to meet multiple and sometimes competing needs. This activity directly tied into another one of our semester learning objectives, creating and programming our own nutritional calculators.
A super BIG THANKS to Ms. He for letting us use the cooking classroom!
Talking with Friends in Japan
Food and culture are indivisibly intertwined. We shared our new-found knowledge of food and nutrition with our good friends at Doshisha International School in Kyoto and continued our semesters-long friendship. This semester, we talked about our eating habits in Taiwan and Japan, what school food is like, and the current COVID situation which has touched and affected all of our lives.
