Sustainable Agriculture

When we eventually move to space, there will be certain resources that will not be so easy to restock or find. In order to keep ourselves alive, we will need to implement an agricultural system that does not require constant replenishment of nutrients. This semester, we explored a few different kinds of farming, including hydroponics, non-fertilizer farming, and worm-assisted composted farming. The results were interesting to see, and gave us a new appreciation for the hard work that both farmers and Mother Nature does.

One method of self-sustaining agriculture may not use soil at all, but simply nutrient rich liquid. The students learned about hydroponics and constructed a simple mechanism which circulates liquid and continually replenishes nutrients to the plants being grown.

When humans eventually start living on alien planets, the issue of sustainability will continue to be a large one, not only because we wish to avoid many of the mistakes that we are making now with regards to resources, but also because it will be difficult to acquisition additional resources to the new location. That means that everything we do will need to be performed in a self-sustaining loop. This includes agriculture. We spoke with Dr. Lin of DoIt regarding the interaction of vegetation, soil, decomposers, and nutrients. Dr. Lin is championing a form of agriculture that makes use of one of nature’s greatest scavengers, worms. With the help of these decomposers, a self-sustained loop that includes our food waste can be utilized to farm without the use of fertilizers or pesticides. The knowledge that the students gained is mentioned here in some essays and utilized elsewhere in another of our learning activities.

Read about it here.

The class experimented with agricultural efficiency and effectiveness by keeping and feeding our worms. The students kept records of the progress and observed how the vegetation reacted when our worms were fed differently. This experiment was unfortunately cut short by covid, be the experience gained will allow us to continue this activity in earnest at the next possible opportunity.
