The smoothie challenges are the special project we had this semester, the purposes of these challenges are for designing smoothies that are healthy for astronauts so they don't get unhealthy in space. In order to accomplish that, we designed three kinds of smoothies and all of them satisfy some kinds of conditions in space. The smoothie 1 was only for good taste, smoothie 2 was for good bone and blood circulation, and smoothie 3 was for good muscles and weight control. In order to prove what kinds of help with health the smoothies provide, we also wrote a program to calculate the nutrition value and compare the result with the recommended daily intake for a middle school student.

First of all, the goal first smoothie challenge was only make the smoothie taste good. Therefore, we only chose milk and strawberries ice cream for our ingredient because we didn't need to think about the nutritional part. Smoothie 1 was the unhealthiest one compared with the other two smoothies we had designed this semester, because it has the most calories and doesn't have much nutrients. The reason was that ice cream was the only ingredient we used except milk, so this smoothie was basically a junk food smoothie. People might also get fat drinking this smoothie because it has the most calories out of the three.

The goal of the second smoothie challenge was to design a smoothie that is good for bones and blood circulation, so we chose cereal, banana, and yogurt for our ingredient. This is because cereal has a big amount of iron and some calcium, yogurt and banana also have some calcium and fiber. Also, smoothie 2 has the least calories of of the three smoothies and that is good for weight control. This smoothie is the best one for you if you want to have good poop, strong bones, and good blood circulation.

The goal of the last smoothie challenge was to make a smoothie that helps growing muscles, so we decided to use mango and yogurt as our ingredient. This is because yogurt and mango both have some protein, and mango also doesn't have much calories. We made this decision because we think people who want to grow muscle also need to control the fat and calories they eat so they can become less fat and more strong, so this smoothie will be the best choice for you if you want to get muscle and control your weight at the same time.

After the smoothie challenges, our conclusion is that the smoothie 3 is the healthiest smoothie for astronauts, because astronauts need to work in zero gravity environment so they will need protein and calcium to make sure they don't lose muscle or get weak bones while they are in space. The smoothie 3 is also very good because it has a lot of fiber and that could help with people's digestive system and also has least calories, it is very good for you if you want to have good poop and also good body shape. The smoothie 1 is the unhealthiest one because it has almost three times more calories than the other two ones, but it is delicious and easy to make. Through out the process of make these smoothies, we learned about how to eat healthy and how to calculate the the nutritional values of foods so we could know what kind of nutrients we are lack of. We also suggest you to try to make the smoothie we made follow the tables below, especially smoothie 2 and 3 because they are both very healthy and delicious.

2. Take 254g of milk and put it in blender

3. Blend it until the ice cream is fully melted

4. Pour it out

1. How good you think your smoothie tasted

Ans: I think our smoothie tasted fine. It just tasted like the strawberry ice cream. However, I think that the ice cream did not taste that good.

2. How well you used your ingredients

Ans: I think we did not use our ingredients well. We bought too much milk and ice cream. Originally, I was against the idea of buying two tubs of ice cream but in the end I agreed because they insisted on it. That was a bad decision because I knew we would not use that much but we still used less than expected. For the milk, we bought extra milk because we thought we had the money and we needed it but in the end we did not.

3. How well your smoothie did in the voting

Ans: Our smoothie did not do very well becuase I think we do not know that many people in Da-an. Their team has an advantage because, they could tell people to vote for them. Another reason is, we did not add many things to our smoothie. We only added milk and ice cream while the other team added things like snacks, sugars, ect. I think the Da-an student liked the variety and appreciated their efforts so they voted for the other team.

4. Things that you would change next time

Ans: Next time, to get more votes, I would be more creative with my recipe and make it a little more complex. Maybe I would also add more things to make the flavour richer. About the wasting food part, I would properly measure the amount we have to make, need to buy and need to make. I also think that we would not waste as much food next time becuase, we have experience now and we know how big the blender is and how much we have to make. In conclusion, this time, we were lazy with our planning and our recipe. In the end, our efforts showed in our poor result.

  1. We should beware of the amount of food we buy.
  2. Be more accurate when measuring.
  3. Taste our ingredients before using.
  4. We should try next time.

1. Add 360g of Milk

2. Add 75g of yogurt

3. Add 1 banana

4. Add 26g of cereal

5. Blend it until you can't see the cereals and bananas

6. Pour it out in cups

1. How good you think your smoothie tasted I think it did not taste very good. It felt hard to drink. The soggy cereal made the drink taste like old people breakfast because it was blended. It was tasteless and plain like porridge. Another problem was the banana smell was not strong enough and it mostly tasted like weirdly sweetened normal milk. However, my description may not have been accurate because I drank it when it before it was refridgerated so it may have tasted a little different after.

2. How easy or difficult it was for you to meet the different nutritional requirements? I think it was pretty easy at least for the calcium and protein part. Those were quite easy to get. However, iron was a little rarer. Eventhough, they were relatively easy to get, I think it made the test a little blend and unseasoned.

3. How well your smoothie did in the voting Our smoothie did not do as bad as last time. We actually tied with a team but I think it was not becuase we did better. In my opinion, we did worse but the other team saved us by doing just as bad. I did not get to try the smoothie with the most votes but I guess it tasted a lot better than ours because, they had more than double our votes. In the end, we got a three for our grade so I guess we did better.

4. Things that you would change next time I would hope that we get to be lucky enough to have all our teammates next time. Eventhough I hate working with people most of the time, I still need help with things I am not competent with. For example, making smoothies. I thought that they would know better than me but it turns out that they might suck as much as I do. I have come to that conclusion because, I have let them take the lead two time and we did not do that well. Next time, I think I will try to give more input. However, it may be worse becuase, I usually focus on the function of something not if it tastes or looks good. So, it will be hard for me because a large part of making smoothies has to do with the taste and look.

5. How you made sure you met the guidelines you set for yourself from last week I put in more effort in the research to make sure that the nutrients were enough. I also tried to give more comments on the taste and even asked the teacher for advice. The next part is we were a lot more careful in the amount of materials we bought. We did not waste any food today eventhough we had leftovers. It was little enough to be able to be finished. Another improvement we made was that we were a lot more accurate when measuring because we had to measure the amount of nutrients we had in our drink.

6. New guideline: Next time, I want to do research on smoothie recipeces to get an idea what would 'taste good' in a smoothie. Then, I would also like to record the nutrients of the things we were buying so as to make sure that we have enough.
