Research about robots and AI by Space Invaders
By Yiler Huang
“I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords.” Said Marty Neumeier, from movie Empire of The Ants (Wells, 1977). Robots and AI are getting smarter than humans. In our team research, we have read some articles about robots and AI which are the subjects of our team project this semester. The articles are about how robots and AI would replace humans in future and how humans can adapt to stay ahead of it. After we read the articles, I think the next step for our research should be more focused on the current AI and robots that we have now, and what are the effects they have brought to our society.
Technology involving AI and robots have been gradually improving over the past few years. From a simple calculator to a robot that cooks your food. It seems that if they continue to keep improving in the future, eventually, they will replace human workers. In fact, according to the article, How will automation impact jobs?, by PwC, it is estimated that thirty percent or current exciting jobs will be replaced by robots and AI by 2030. There also have been many cases in which robots can now cook food like the burger chef robot Flippy from the article, What if A.I. is coming for jobs faster than we thought?, by Alex Salkever. This shows that if you give these robots the tools, they could be more accurate and precise than a normal human being when they are cooking. This also means that it is very possible that our generation will need to face the problem of being replaced by robots and AI.
If robots and AI are getting so good that they might replace human jobs, what can we do to avoid or stay ahead of it? In the article THE ROBOT CURVE (Neumeier,n.d.), by Marty Neumeier. It tells us that even though robots and AI could replace skilled workers in the future, they would take a long time to learn how to do creative work. This means that if people do not want to be not replaced by robots and AI, they focus on certain skill sets. Critical thinking, creativity, and cognitive thinking are all advantages that we have over robots and AI. In the article, 9 Soft Skills Every Employee Will Need In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence (AI) (Marr, 2020), by Bernard Marr. They specifically stated the skills that humans will need in order to not be replaced by robots and AI are: creativity, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, interpersonal communication skills, active learning with a growth mindset, judgment and decision making, leadership skills, diversity and cultural intelligence, and embracing change.
Based on what we have researched, I think our next step should be more focused on the current AI and robots that we have now, and what are the effects they have brought to our society. AI has not reached the point where it is fully ready to be integrated. For example, in the article, What Happened to Microsoft’s Tay AI Chatbot? (Pensworth, 2019), by Luke Pensworth. It talks about how an AI program was corrupted due to its lack of critical thinking and ability to recognize sarcasm. By understanding how robots and AI function now, I think that using current existing AI and robots as examples is helpful for our research.
For knowing the future of robots and AI, I think we should focus on the history like some examples I introduced to you. Therefore, in the next part of our research, our team should go search for some articles or examples about current existing AI and robots on the internet. This is because we might need them to answer the question “Do robots need”rights “?” and make the correct caption about “The “Robot Curve ``''. Robots and AI improved a lot in the past couple few years, but they are still in their early stage. There is so much that we can still learn and improve. We still have plenty of time to develop a relationship to work together instead of getting replaced by robots and AI.

“I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords.”
在 Marty Neumeier 的文章 THE ROBOT CURVE (Neumeier, n.d.)
