Space Invaders Lunar Surface Challenge
Trying to survive in any sort of environment that humans have not evolved to live in would be a great challenge. This table shows some characteristics of the lunar surface and the challenges they would present to the human body.
Type | Data數據 | Challenges for Humans (or for rover) | Requirements of Rover | Ideas for Rover Design |
---|---|---|---|---|
Land Height
Highest最高: 5km Lowesty最低: -9km Moon terrain slopes gradually increase from the head of the lobe, with slopes generally near 25°, to the toe, with slopes averaging 32°. Lowest Highest |
Too tall for humans to climb
Be able to go up steep slopes. Wheels will need strong gripping power. | In order to grab the lunar surface, the tires will need to be made by woven mesh of zinc-coated piano wire to which titanium treads were riveted in a chevron pattern. This pattern kept the wheels from sinking into the soft lunar soil. |
Temperature
127 celsius to -173 celcius 127
Not good for humans.
Be able to stand different temperatures and keep humans inside alive. Walls of the rover should be able to insulate inside to protect people and equipment. | cementitious and phenolic foams and perlite can be used to insulate the cold temperature. Metal? Takes temperature extremes Tungsten, stainless steel, chromium, molybdenum, titanium, nickel Highly reflective foils in radiant barriers and reflective insulation |
Cosmic Radiation
60 microsieverts of radiation per hour | Between 2000000 and 10000000 microsieverts in a short-term dose would cause severe radiation sickness with increasing likelihood that this would be fatal. Exposure to low levels of radiation in the environment does not cause immediate health effects. But it can slightly increase your overall risk of cancer. | Be able to keep humans from dying from it. Material should be able to stop or lessen radiation exposure. | We will use tungsten for sure! Cause it can fight with radiation |
Lunar Soil
Composition: soil made up of (1) rock fragments, (2) mineral grains and (3) glass particles mineral fragments, crystalline rock fragments, breccia fragments, impact glasses, and agglutinates. |
Might hurt for humans to stand on. I would assume standing on glass particles would hurt. It won’t hurt human that much, but their tool will get a lot of damages, and all of the tool are very expensive and break easily too. | Have thick and durable wheels. |
airtight? |
Distance from Earth
Need time to get there.
About three days
Too long to help in emergency situations
Can be easily transported. Needs have the ability to contact lunar base and Earth. |
It will need to have an antenna and a walkie talkie. |
Atmosphere
Atmosphere made up of neon, helium, and hydrogen | Not breathable. Permanent brain damage begins after only 4 minutes without oxygen, and death can occur as soon as 4 to 6 minutes later. | Inside rover should be airtight. | airtight |
Gravity
1.62 m/s² | Less than earth. 9.807 m/s² Might cause circulatory problems for astronauts when they return to Earth and an increased risk of heart attack later in life. Muscles and bones began to weaken and shrink |
Not float off the surface of moon. |
