Lucas' essay about The Martian
Ow! You get hurt then you put on a bandaid. But at the end of the day, how would you take it off? Would it be super fast or super slow? This is important because in a critical life situation when you are in cruciating pain, you would not know what to do. You should listen to me because I have experienced a situation like this before. I will talk about what you should do in this situation, the evidence, and my experience.
First off, you have a bandage and you don't know what way you should rip it off. Would you rip it off quickly or slowly? I believe that the correct way is to pull it off quickly because you will only experience one to two seconds of pain. But, if you pulled it off slowly you would experience 10 seconds of pain and would have said, “oh damn this hurts''. When you pull it off quickly, the pain will be shorter. You do it slower, the pain will be more excruciating.
Now I will show the evidence to support my answer. An article from MJA said that they recorded pain scores of the people who pulled a bandaid off quickly and the people who did it slowly (Furyk et al., 2009). The results were that the overall mean pain score was 0.92 for the people who quickly pulled it. The other result said that the overall mean pain score was 1.58 for a slow bandage removal. I think you just need to breathe like 5 times and just rip it. This means that quicker bandage removal equals less pain.
Finally, I will talk about my experience of ripping a bandaid off my skin. 2 years ago, I got a bad cut on my leg. Since I had to take a shower, I had to take the bandaid off. I started ripping it off slowly and it started to get more painful as it went on. It was a horrible experience and took me close to 5 minutes to take it off. A year later, I got a shot and decided this time I was going to take it off quickly. I hesitated a little bit but I decided that I will just do it and only losers won't do this. I took 2 deep breaths and ripped it off and exhaled. In the end, I was surprised about how short the pain was.
All in all, I think explaining what you do in this situation, the evidence, and the experience should help you in the future. To be honest it doesn't really matter if you are weak or not. It matters about how much pain you want. If you want loads of pain take it off slowly. If you want a short quick amount of pain, take it off quickly. Now, you should tell your friends and family that taking a bandage off quickly will be a shorter and quicker amount of pain. Don't be too surprised if you say, “Ow!”, because it is common that you will feel some pain while doing this.
