Larissa's Essay about Good Bad Leadership

by Larissa Kuo

Have you guys ever experienced having a bad leader? I have experienced it multiple times in my old school. Even though not all teachers are bad, some teachers are good and bad in their own ways. So I will be comparing a good and bad leader.

During my 2nd year of elementary school, I had a teacher that was really awesome and took care of us like her own kids. But in the 2nd month of school, she had to take a temporary leave because she was pregnant. We had a substitute teacher from South Africa that was pretty strict. And things didn’t go as we wished with a substitute teacher.

My first impression of the substitute teacher was pretty okay. She was tall, with a straight face with square glasses. She looked like those professors from Harry Potter. She was nice at first, but she didn’t really care much about us. She would be doing her nails in the middle of class. She would make us clean our table with clean wipes at the end of every lesson. She will ask us to do things that are not necessary or do things that normal teachers wouldn’t do. She wouldn’t lead us when we are doing classes, she would throw us a book and tell us to finish reading it by the end of the day. But she acted so nice and lead us so well on the day when our teacher came back to visit. On that day, we received news that we all didn’t really expect.

Our teacher told us that she wouldn't be able to teach us anymore since she will be busy with her newborn. That means we will be stuck with a careless teacher for the next 5 months of 2nd grade. We were shocked when we heard the news. Every day, we missed how our old teacher would treat us. She would do everything with us when it comes to anything school. She would make classes fun and interesting for us to learn. She would always be there when we called her name. That's what a good leader should be, not sitting on the chair filing her nails.

Is your leader as bad as my substitute teacher? We have covered 2 kinds of leaders now, a good and caring leader, and a careless not-so-good leader. Which kind of leader do you like more? I obviously like the caring leader more, we are still kids at that time, what will we do without someone leading us? So this story tells us how a good leader can affect everything.
