Judging Adults vs. Judging Students
By Yiler Huang
After getting some opinions from the general public about how they view the worth of a person, I have a few thoughts on the data we have collected. The major idea being that I believe that way too many people uses the amount of wealth a person has to measure a person's value, and I think it it shallow to look at people this way because the amount of money a person can earn has a lot to do with luck. In certain ways, it feels like people are too used to measuring prices and value with money and forgot that there are other things that are important too.
From the Wang's (2023) data we can see that money and finance are in the third place among all 9 kinds of categories. About one third of all the subjects had answers related to money or wealth, and it is a big number in my opinion. In Wang's article (Wang, 2023) he mentioned the famous question of picking a person out of two to save from drowning, and I think it is an interesting way of looking at the value of a person. Even though this kind of calculation might not be scientific, but we can roughly guess that one third of people in the Taiwanese society would save the person who's richer if two people are drowning. The society is going to be pretty messed up if this much people think this way. In the society nowadays, many things are measured according to monetary value including people, service, education etc. and I believe that this is not a healthy way for a society to think. Money is only the tool we invented to make our lives easier. We should be the ones deciding how we use money and not letting money to become the shackle that chooses the way we live and view people.
Even though I believe that there are too many people who uses money to judge the value of others, there is still hope in the society. In the results of the research done by Huang (2023), we can see that not many people uses money as a standard to measure a student's value. Which explained that the society hasn't start using money to measure the worths of students yet. However, it is important to know that the society is always changing and might start using money to measure the worth of a student one day. We need to be more aware of this because I believe looking at how wealthy a person isn't a good way to decide their value.
