"Good Morning" Experiment
By: Zoey
This research was conducted to find out the different reactions of males and females toward different genders.
Hypothesis
This was the original hypothesis about how males and females would react to this experiment.
Female giving stimulus (the researcher)
Female (the subjects) | Male (the subjects) |
---|---|
When the female says ‘good morning’ to a female Females might think it unintelligible but they would still nod politely. | If it is a female researcher males may not think the female researcher is talking to them so they(males) might just walk away to avoid misunderstanding. |
(30% will react / 70% won’t react) | (20% will react / 80% won’t react) |
Male giving stimulus (the researcher)
Female (the subjects) | Male (the subjects) |
---|---|
Females may think that the male researcher is an abnormal person(because male researchers don’t seem to have mental difficulties) and they pretend nothing happens. | Males react to male researchers will be the most responsive because males are more childish and they may treat the male researchers as an unfamiliar brother |
(15% will react / 85% won’t react) | (45% will react / 55% won’t react) |
Data result
Female (the researcher)
Female (the subjects) | Male (the subjects) |
---|---|
(20% will react / 80% won’t react) | (33.3% will react / 66.7% won’t react) |
Male (the researcher)
Female (the subjects) | Male (the subjects) |
---|---|
(25% will react / 75% won’t react) | (33.3% will react / 66.7% won’t react) |
Discussion
Before the experiment began, researchers hypothesized that females might think the male researcher was an abnormal person and pretend that nothing happened, the experiment data have proven this hypothesis, and only 25% of the female subjects responded. As the showcased data, 33.3% of males nodded in response to the male researcher. This is close to the researcher’s original hypothesis because males are more childish, they likely treat the male researchers as new brothers, so maybe they respond naturally to the male researcher. The response proportion of males to the female researcher was also 33.33%. However, the researcher initially thought that males might not think the female researcher was greeting them(saying good morning), therefore they(males) might walk away to avoid awkwardness, which indicates the difference between the researcher’s hypothesis and the actual result. When the female researcher says ‘good morning’ to female subjects, female subjects might think it unintelligible but still nod politely. However, only 20% of female subjects responded to the female researcher.
This experiment clearly shows the difference in responses between males and females when someone greets them. In the Big 5 Personality Traits, Males in general are mostly extraversion, extraversion people are talkative and enjoy making friends, which explains why males react the most in the experiment, regardless of gender. Males are higher in extraversion, females are lower in extraversion. Females may be afraid of unfamiliar persons greeting them, but this does not mean that females are cold to indifferent. Females have a higher level of agreeableness, friendliness, and pleasantness, so they may be more helpful. Through this and the previous “Drop It” experiment two experiments, the conclusion is that if you need help, females may be willing to help and if you just want to talk males may be more willing to talk.
