One of the big discussion topics for this period explored the degree to which our birth circumstances are responsible for and control our success later in life. At the same time these genetic factors will often shape our perceptions of the value of an individual. Gattaca, a modern day classic starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Jude Law, presented the students with the story which showed us the life of a man born in less than ideal genetic circumstances and his struggle to overcome both real and socially prescribed limitations. This movie facilitated deep and meaningful thought and discussions among the class. Some of the students' thoughts and opinions are shown here.
