Interview with Gear8
By daniel chen
It has often been true that society has had distinct expectations for men and women. To understand these distinct expectations and the reasons behind it, we have conducted an interview with two female graphic designers from Gear 8, which is a design company. We looked at five stages in life: the time before middle school, middle school/high school years, college, job search, and the professional work phase.
In the conversation, I found out some interesting things. One of the interesting thing is when I ask which student's clubs had a particularly large number of girls or boys? one of the interviewee answered that the members in the music club were girls, and that boys didn't even have the opportunity to join in, She also mentioned that for older people they think that women should present themselves more openly to society. This seems to be the reason that music club only have girls.
Another interesting things is one of interviewee answered that almost every member in art club are females, and it's different from music club because males are allow to join art club, so there should be more males in this club, She also said when man and woman are choosing class, man often choose science and woman often choose art,she think that it is because men were expected to have a good job, which made men want to focus on learning valuable skills they could use in the future, and women seen as not needing to work at that time, they can chose clubs base on their preference.
last interesting things she said is people who join sport and debate club are mostly man, since she didn't say other things about it, I think men often join these clubs because of the culture their parents compare them to others, and joining allows them to compete and compare.
The interview show us in the past most people think woman is not as important as man. In my opinion, the only situation where men and women should be treated differently is when it concerns physical attributes, like strength. Otherwise, men and women should be treated equally in all other aspects, especially in the workplace and personal growth experiences. In that case the society can improve faster, and also there are a lot of thing that only woman can do, we should respect them more.
In conclusion, our interview revealed insights into past and present societal changes. We learned about media consumption, parenting differences, and progress in gender equality. Our results might not show the whole picture because we talked to only a few people. To make our findings more accurate, we should talk to more people with different viewpoints.
