Communication with 2nd graders at Qing Shan Elemetary School

by Olivia Wang

One of the themes of our class in this semester is to make Christmas gifts for the kids in the second grade of 青山國小. During the period we have a video chat with kids to understand what they interesting about. We will use the Information that we get to make the first step of design the toy.

Before we talk to them, we designed a few questions. When designing the questions, we tried our best to make the questions tactful. For example, change “What color do you like?” into “What is color of your favorite toy?”, “What color do you have the most of your clothes?” ……the reason why we do that. Is because we hope that kids will not be disturbed by the standard answers and answer the most true answers in their hearts. So the information we get, will be more true and valuable.

After many questions, we knew their favourite colors, animals, cartoons, subjects and things they usually like to do, etc…. We will use this information to determine whether the toys we make should be. First, because the kids reacted enthusiastically to animals, “animals” became our first prerequisite. Then we decided to incorporate Japanese elements into our toys, because in the cartoons the kids answered. Almost all of them are Japanese anime. So we guess they may like Japanese elements and styles. the last prerequisite is that it can’t be a doll that can only be put on the table, because most of the kids like the most toy at home. All of the toys are movable or usable (racing cars, robots, laptops, bicycles…) and their favorite subjects are PE. So we think this toy should be a toy that can interact with kids and that kids can play with.

So through the above points, at the end we want to make a pinball machine or mini bowling ball. We can combine Japanese style and animals to design many different characters for the kids to choose. And for the ball, we can design some special editions balls. like the anime-themed balls that kids like. such as Pokémon's Ball or Dragon Ball, etc…, and then integrate into the environmental protection issues of this semester, to make paper balls, plastic balls ,metal balls, etc., and then roll these balls to the corresponding trash can. So that this toy not only meet the above three conditions, it also allow kids to learn how to protect the environment while having fun.

Back to the beginning. our original intention of making this toy was to make the children happy. so as many as the children have fun. then this design is successful. but if the children can learn from play, it would be great. So we hope to bring more value to children through this design. And this design is also representative our class. It can pass our school's entertaining teaching style to them, so that they can also understand our school atmosphere, so that we can all understand each other better.

by Olivia Wang
