Researching Historical Background of Elderly Interviewee

When the Japanese came to Taiwan they set up the first western-styled education primary school in Taiwan. Japan had very strict regulations on education. In 1919 most Taiwanese went to public school. It also has schools called “small schools” that are only for Japanese students or rich Taiwanese families to study. In the “small school” the space and teachers are better than in “public school” (the content in small school is deeper). In 1941 Japanese set the age limit in primary school, and set the policy of 6 years for primary school. At that time they have a lot of classes like Japanese, western art, and singing….etc.

80 years ago. Most people think girls can not do physical strength work. So most of the girl work in the past was more like a service. The job that many girls “wanted” was a department store service lady. One of the reasons girls like to do this work is because the salary is higher and people think they look like superstars. Relatively few women would become accountants, because it is very hard to pass the test and it is a lot of work needed to do.

Chinese men have been regarded as the heart of the family since ancient times. Men need to make money, women need to take care of the home and do housework. In addition, women must listen to their husbands. In the past, boys could study at school but girls could not.
