Customer Experience Simulation

As part of the customer research process, the students looked at literature regarding the changes to the body with the natural aging process. Additionally, they spoke with a nursing professional to gain further insight into the possible limitations of aging physicality. This culminated with the construction of a simulation suit which could give participants an approximation of what it may feel like to inhabit an aging body.

Upon construction of the elderly simulation suit, the students each donned the suit and performed some everyday actions to get a better feel for what an aging body might feel like. It was an eye-opening and educational experience.

As a continuation of the “service” aspect of this semester's learning and another opportunity to gain information for our research for redesigning facilities and processes for inclusive society, the students created simulations and a service process to help everyday volunteers experience what it might be like to become older. A series of simulation challenges were designed, along with imagining the process and creating easy to understand instructions for how to perform in the simulations. The class utilized skills that they had been working on earlier with regards to service and communication for effective outcomes.

After some great participation from a few brave volunteers, the students were able to gain valuable information from the simulations regarding difficulties that elderly people may have when performing some everyday actions. The students organized their observations and later used them to help formulate ideas and suggestions for changes to facilities and processes for inclusive society.
