Daily Process Simulation
After researching the experience and possible difficulties for the elderly by running simulations and collecting data, the students set about delving even more deeply into this topic by performing an in-depth and detailed analysis of some of the normal life processes that most people undertake on a daily basis. This was a two-step process which first involved observations about normal interaction between users and facilities/products and later included personal experience and reactions to the elderly user experience.
Storyboard Planning for Video Data Collection of Daily Processes
In order to study how people normally interact with facilities, other people, and the process itself when performing some everyday actions, the students prepared and designed a plan to capture natural activity in action. This involved many of the normal parts of planning a video shoot such as location scouting, camera placement, crew management, and more. Shown here are some basic storyboards that helped each director communicate with the camera crew and ready each shoot.
Data Collection Results Table for Observations of Daily Processes
We looked at how the average individual interacts with the environment and facilities during the daily processes we studied. This involved extended video capture in some different locations, after which the students observed and analyzed the actions of ten subjects. The most common procedures and actions were compiled to form an image of the “average user” and how they undertook some daily processes such as taking an escalator, walking on the sidewalk, eating in a restaurant, and buying tickets and entering the metro station. These tables show the results of the data collection and also highlight the most common shared similarities of users.
