Organization and Interpretation in Perception
By Steve Wang
Personally, I feel that people having different interpretations of the same thing is the most important takeaway of today’s discussion. I can see how this could be very useful for communication. On one hand, we should keep this in mind when communicating about work with colleagues. On the other hand we could use use this to our advantage when trying to convince someone. For example, to convince our workaholic friend, Greg, to go on a vacation, we could say this. Let us take a trip out, it would be a good change of scenery and can give us new motivation and inspiration for our work. It would also be calming which would help us better focus when working. If you agree, I will do the planning. If you payed attention, I never mentioned working during work. So , when you plan the trip you could do whatever you want and if you feel like it, give him some downtime to work. In this way, he might text positively and may interpret it as a work trip. Then he will realize he had interpreted it wrong when he actually goes on the trip. Keep in mind this is just an example, if you did this Greg would probably not be your friend after that trip. However, it would be a perfect example on how you could use people different interpretations of things to your advantage.
