Audacity: Noise Reduction
introduction
When a recording has unwanted noise, like an air conditioner, ventilator, background hiss, or other noise, Audacity can help us to remove it while leaving the other audio as close to the “clean” state as possible. Notice that the Audacity developers say that “It is not suitable for individual clicks and pops, or irregular background noise such as from traffic or an audience.” You can still try, but the results probably won't be great, and it's likely to affect the audio in other ways that you don't want, like changing the character of the sound. Still, it's a great tool!
