Attitudes on Government Spending for Animal Welfare

by researchers: Shannia Lin, Brendon Chang, Howard Lee, Yuna Wu

Our research group believes that animal/dog and human territory overlap is a large problem. We think this because animals are forced to live in the human world and aren’t getting the basic needs. One way to alleviate this problem may be to build more or improve on shelters to help separate dog and human territory. Therefore, the topic of animal and human territory overlap is one that would give us valuable information. We would use this information to suggest to the government to change the policy, particularly with respect to using more resources and funds towards animal welfare.

Our group conducted this research by direct interviews and questionnaires. The subjects consisted of 74 respondents. 41 are female, 32 are male and 1 other. The subjects were individuals who work or live in Taipei City.

Do you agree that we should take part of our infrastructure tax and spend it more on building animal shelters?

Few people disagree (7% of total respondents) with taking part of our infrastructure tax and spending it more on building animal shelters. These numbers suggest that the proposal of spending more tax dollars to build animal shelters would be popular and accepted by the general public.

This means our next step should be to propose this information to the government. One way to allow the government to understand the attitude of the public would be to ask people to sign a petition. The petition would help express the widely held opinion of taking part of infrastructure tax and spending on animal shelter. Afterwards, our group would find out how we should suggest this to the government. Some ideas about how this would be done are to build animal shelters, animal adoption programs, animal friendly playgrounds or restaurants in the city.

Do you agree that we should take part of our infrastructure tax and spend it more on building animal shelters?

Knowing that most people agree (93%) with this idea we can spread this information on various forms of media to gain support for making actual policy changes in using taxes.

Our team believes, if we can create marketing materials and put it out we will be able to spread the idea that we should take part of our infrastructure tax and spend it more on building animal shelters better and more efficiently. From the information we already collected we can guess that most people agree and we will attempt to get people to sign a petition. Not only just posters, we could create a website, social media, etc. We could get support from other organizations to help spread this idea. Some organizations might be SPCA or ACT. We might attempt to get donations from boxes for people to put unwanted change in, and use these funds to create marketing material for this action.

Do you agree that we should take part of our infrastructure tax and spend it more on building animal shelters?

Knowing that most people agree (93%) with this idea we can ask our school to set up a non-profit organisation.

Our research team believes, if we set up a non-profit organisation for this cause we can get more help from other people to support this idea. We are suggesting this because we currently don’t have enough to actually make a difference in government policy. Since we know that most people agree we can get signatures by setting up posters and possibly have our school make a non-profit organisation to help. This will help spread this idea that we should indeed take part of our infrastructure tax to build more animal shelters.

Our team believes that we should spread the results of our research and push policy makers to make changes. By setting up different advertisements so that we can inform people about our plan and what we want to achieve, we hope to gain more support in public opinion in making the change happen, which is to take a larger part of our infrastructure tax to build or improve on animal shelters. Our team believes the next step should be to start getting people to sign a petition to add pressure for the government to change it. We believe that by having the government build more shelters, the problem of overpopulated stray animals would see some improvement. This would also do much to help lessen the problem of the overlap in territory of humans and homeless animals.
