When faced with difficulties and problems, people naturally reach for seemingly “direct” and “obvious” solutions. This can be seen in policy decisions across all areas, and in the decisions we make in everyday situations. Oftentimes, such brash action only deals with the surface-level phenomenon and does little to truly address real problems, causing the problems to be lingering issues that are never truly solved.

In order to truly break down problems and attempt to find root causes, methods of analysis such as the Ishikawa (fishbone) diagram and 5 Why analysis can be useful tools.

Approaching problems in this fashion is time-consuming and may not come naturally, and so we practiced using these methods of thinking and analysis in our mission of helping alleviate the problem of homeless animals.
