Your Conversation with Doshisha Partner

By: Yuna Wu

You have had a conversation with your partner.

Write and discuss your thoughts about:

1. The food information you gave that your partner seemed to be the most interested in or surprised by

He wasn't really surprised by the things that I talked about to him. He has been living in Taiwan for a few years. The things that I talked about he all ate it before. But he says that he likes Taiwan’s mango shaved ice. I think I agree with that, I like Taiwan’s mango shaved ice too.

2. The food information that you asked about and got an answer to

I say that I like to eat takoyaki(章鱼烧). He says that when I eat I must add bonito flakes. When I eat takoyaki(章鱼烧), I always add bonito flakes.

3. Differences in the way that your partner talks or communicates compared to what you are used to in your friends around you

I think maybe because his Chinese is pretty good, so it doesn't really have any differences. I think the only difference is some of the Chinese words that he doesn't really know, so he will search for them on Google.

4. What are two things you had trouble understanding when you were talking to your partner?

I don’t really have any trouble understanding when I talk to my partner, his Chinese is really good. I understand all of the words that he says.

5. What kind of things do you need to remember and what kind of skills are needed for cross-cultural communication?

I think the need for cross-cultural communication is that you need to know some habits and speech traditions, because there may be some words that we think are normal for speech, and may be rude behavior for their culture.
