Steve Wang: Conversation with Doshisha Partner

By: Steve Wang

  1. The food information you gave that your partner seemed to be the most interested in or surprised by
    1. They were not really surprised becuase they did research on food in Taiwan. They were most likely surprised because I was so weird. Another thing that probably surprised them was what kind of food I decided to talk about. I chose to talk about more mordern food that she could relate to like 7-11 and Mcdonald's. SO, she would have a rough idea what it was but in the end, there would also be some differece. I believe that the difference would also reflect on what kinds of food different people eat in different areas.
  2. The food information that you asked about and got an answer to
    1. They sometimes have corn flakes and milk for breakfast which is surprising because I have never done that. Maybe it is because I am weird.
    2. I also asked her about her school because I wanted to talk about different things. She said that her school was an international school. As a result, they had to learn more English compared to other schools. After she replied, I also explained a little about or school.
  3. Differences in the way that your partner talks or communicates compared to what you are used to in your friends around you
    1. This person is easier to talk to because they have to talk well to get good grades. So, they have motivation to talk politely and continue the conversation. Another thing is, she tried to do the serious talking while I was not too serious most of the time. However, the most important point is I tried to be nice and socialize. When I tried, she probably thought I was a crazy person and was humoring me. That may be so but, I do not care. As long as it was not awkward I do not care if they think I am mad.
  4. What are two things you had trouble understanding when you were talking to your partner?
    1. Basically everything she tried to say in chinese. However, instead of laughing, I was nice and encouraged her and tried to guess what she was trying to say. The only thing I could understand was when she was talking about bubble tea. However, when I could not, I would try to guess if not I would ask her to repeat.
  5. What kind of things do you need to remember and what kind of skills are needed for cross-cultural communication?
    1. I remember that has lived in Japan, Korea, Thailand and she can speak English, Japanese and Korean. Knowing many languages are useful for cross-cultural communication. Another useful tool is Google Translate but the most important thing might be having knowing what to talk about. I have also realised for cross-cultuaral communication, researching into their background and cultures might be important because I do not want to accidentally say something rude.
