Outcome Bias: Difficult Decisions

By Yiler Huang

Choosing to study music in university

  1. I enjoy studying this subject
  2. I think doing music stuff is fun
  3. I might be able to continue doing what I like after graduating (if things go well)
  4. It only takes 2 years to graduate from a music school
  5. The school I want to go to is in Japan, which is relatively close to Taiwan

Choosing to study something else in university

  1. More job opportunity
  2. My parents will be more satisfied
  3. Higher income in the future
  4. More stable income
  5. Possibly better life in general

Why are these important decisions?

This decision can affect my future job application and possibly determine what kind of jobs I would be able to do in the future. If I choose the wrong thing to study, I might not have the abilities or skills the society is demanding, which might result in difficulties in finding jobs or earning money. Choosing a good career is important as it is a big part of what makes a person's life enjoyable or not.

Why is it difficult to make the choice

It is a difficult choice to make because the career path I choose can decide what I would do for living for over half of my lifetime, and university can affect job applications since companies like to look at what school people went to. I will need to be very careful when making this choice due to how much it can impact my life.
